The APC Toolkit was developed for nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who want to advance their existing practice to include comprehensive abortion care, as well as for those who are already providing care in this area. The “Toolkit” frames abortion as an extension of the work that advanced practice clinicians already do, and discusses it as a scope of practice issue. It includes detailed information that clinicians need to understand and be prepared to provide comprehensive abortion care, such as how state regulatory boards make decisions about whether abortion is within a clinician’s scope of practice; submitting materials to a state licensing board to document that abortion care is within the essential scope of practice elements; and responding to a request from a state regulatory board’s practice advisory committee to explain how scope of practice has advanced for abortion care; and more. It is an essential resource for any nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner or physician assistant who wants to include abortion in their clinical practice.
The Toolkit was created by Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and the Abortion Access Project (now Provide), and is currently under revision.
