Learning tools for nurses providing sexual health care to older adults
Nurses and other health care providers often overlook sexuality in older adults. The National League of Nursing’s Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES) program developed a three part teaching strategy to help nurses and nursing students better understand sexuality in older adults, assess their own comfort level discussing sexuality, and discuss their perception of the role of sexuality in the lives of older adults. The ACES program uses the PLISSIT Model of Assessment of Sexuality in Older Adults and includes a video, article, discussion questions, and PowerPoint files with Sexuality Awareness questions. Nurse educators can use the complete teaching exercise or individual components with their students.
